Of French-American nationality, Nathalie Harvey was born in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in 1975.
“Painting is before all else a game and my workshop a magnificent land of adventures where accidents – always positive and inspiring – happen.”
Woman has always been her theme of preference.
Nathalie Harvey began by placing the gaze on herself, her canvas and her intimacy and so painted a series of auto-portraits. Pure observation has evolved progressively towards a much more cerebral work.
From this comes the "Killers” in which the artist continues to explore the gaze all while broadening her scope to the female body and its power, its colour and matter. Through her inspiration, her women transform themselves into creatures, puppets or cartoon characters. With the “Mona Lisas” series, a logical continuation of the preceding one, Nathalie Harvey captures Mona Lisa’s intriguing femininity and passionate guile; the universal and timeless mystery of the history of Art. At the same time, she endeavours to express the subterranean fluids which underlie and lead life, to seize the instinct as well as the moment, with the series “Light Women”.
The intensity of this « interior » gaze reaches such overwhelming proportions that the artist feels the need to free herself of it and to liberate her painting with regards to subject and form.
These creatures and their powerful bodies come off their canvas, transform themselves and reveal themselves through the painter’s inspiration.
