Monolithe Monolithe Monolithe Monolithe Monolithe

Program

A parcel of light rises above the nave, weightless in the church’s choir. A black monolith stands a few metres above us, floating in a dazzling bath of light. Unfathomable, the vertical form welcomes deep and lively strata into its centre, vibrating and unreal. The slack smoke is slowly coloured by a succession of monochromes.

Monolithe (« Monolith ») is a meditative work – The space is stimulated through light and sound in an endless loop. The church’s sacred space, isolated from the exterior sound and light environment, immerses us in a frozen moment in time. The temporal variability of the lights, their rhythm of appearance, allows for ambiguities of perception. A primitive form, the monolith represents a force, a fundamental energy.

The musical composition developed by artist Frédéric Nogray is pre-recorded, broadcast permanently and accompanied by a series of performances from crystal bowls which punctuate the course of the night. The sound produced by these bowls is pure in harmonics and allows for play with the acoustic space and bodily perceptions. These bowls are made like crucibles for the state of the art new technologies industry. They are 99.99 % made of the silica from the human body, which produces resonance effects between the two.
